Faust Review

A nice review of FAUST...

"The opera "Faust" by French composer Charles Gounod may begin with a contract between a man and the devil, but it ends on a love story between a woman and God.

The love story in particular sticks with you long after soprano Caroline Worra sings her final redemptive notes as Marguerite, the girl Faust seduces and nearly damns with the help of Mephistopheles in the current moody and often moving Opera Memphis production..."

Dress Caper in Shreveport

Our friends Dean Anthony and Steve Aiken caught someone trying to steal Manon's dress from the theatre in Shreveport. KTBS reports:

"A panhandler who walked into a Shreveport Opera rehearsal stole part of the diva's dress. He took off running -- the purloined gown billowing behind him and four members of the opera in hot pursuit. He was cornered in a wooded area on the south side of downtown and arrested. "

It's why they lock up valuables in the theatre. The guy had to settle for the diva's dress.

Bravo Jim Hyter

Last week, a memorial service was held for James Hyter. Although most recently known for his renditions of "Old Man River" at Sunset Symphony performances, Jim sang in several Opera Memphis productions in the seventies. He blazed a trail for other singers and Opera Memphis is proud of the diversity it has in its casting thanks to singers like him.

Steampunk Faust

On the first day of rehearsals, our costume designer, Katie Irish, gave a presentation about the steampunk approach we are going with for FAUST. That's stage director Matthew Lata in the foreground.
