Signs of the times
One of my freelance gigs out of town has cut three of its six performances. We are not looking at that in Memphis, but we are examining switching to smaller and cheaper venues next year for some performances.
Perhaps some performances at the Opera Memphis building with experimental themes could bring in new audiences to the opera.
I'm not sure what the right formula is, but Memphis responds, I believe, to innovative takes on old classics. The example that comes to mind is the New Ballet Ensemble's version of The Nutcracker... Did you know there were three different Nutcracker performance this weekend in Memphis?
